Key Questions
The following key questions are answered in this module:
Why is it important to keep operating and maintenance logs for refrigeration systems?
When a problem arises, these logs can help pinpoint when a problem first appeared and reveal all of its effects. They also help ensure inspection and maintenance activities are performed regularly.
What kinds of troubleshooting tools are available?
Equipment manuals, wiring and control schematics, operations and maintenance logs, and system diagnostic charts can all help.
If the compressor won't start and there is no "hum," what does this mean?
Power might not be getting to the motor or starter, or a control circuit might be open.
If the compressor won't start but the motor hums, what could be the problem?
The compressor might be seized, the motor might be shorted, there could be a power supply problem, or the compressor might not have unloaded.
If the compressor starts but cuts out right away, or if it starts and stops continuously, what does this mean?
There are many possible reasons for this, including a low load, oversized system, faulty thermostat, plugged filter, or low refrigerant charge, among others.
