In a hydraulic system, pressure applied anywhere to a contained, incompressible fluid is transmitted undiminished throughout the fluid. This course covers the purpose and function of the valves and various components used in a typical hydraulic system to control pressure, transmit fluid, and filter contaminants.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the common types of hydraulic valves (based on their functions)
  • Describe common types of hydraulic tubes, pipes, and hoses
  • Describe common types of hydraulic fittings
  • Describe the purpose of filters and strainers
  • Recognize common symptoms of hydraulic system problems
  • Describe how to avoid fluid contamination

Key Questions

The following key questions are answered in this module:

What is a hydraulic valve responsible for?
Hydraulic valves control the direction, flow, and pressure of fluid throughout a hydraulic system.

What are some common types of hydraulic O-ring fittings?
Straight thread fittings, flat-face fittings, and flange or split-flange fittings are all common on hydraulic systems.

What purpose does a strainer or filter serve in a hydraulic system?
Strainers and filters help remove damaging particles from the hydraulic fluid.

What are some symptoms of hydraulic system problems?
Abnormally loud whining or knocking noises, excessive heat, and reduced or erratic performance can all be signs of problems with a hydraulic system.

How do I prevent contamination of hydraulic fluid?
By cleaning and checking equipment and parts before installation and startup, properly maintaining fluid and filters, and by following the manufacturer's scheduled maintenance recommendations.

Sample Video Transcript

Below is a transcript of the video sample provided for this module:

Pressure control valves are designed to help hydraulic systems either maintain a desired range of operating pressures, or protect system components from overpressure conditions. Pressure relief valves actuate a switch to open at a predetermined pressure, to quickly redirect high volumes of excess fluid back to the reservoir. Pressure reducing valves typically remain open, adjusting continually to provide different operating pressures for subsystem components.
