The following key questions are answered in this module:
Why is it important to understand hydraulic fluid safety? Many machines in a typical workplace use hydraulics to provide power such as forklifts and hand-held power tools. Knowing how they work and how to use them properly can make the use of hydraulic-powered equipment very beneficial. However, hydraulic systems also can be dangerous. It is important for workers to understand how hydraulic machines work and the dangers associated with hydraulic fluid to avoid these dangers.
How do hydraulic systems work? A basic hydraulic system consists of three parts: a smaller diameter piston, hydraulic fluid (usually some type of oil), and a larger diameter piston. When force is applied to the smaller piston, it creates pressure which is transferred through the incompressible hydraulic fluid. The pressure acting on the larger piston magnifies the output force of that piston.
What are the primary hazards associated with hydraulic fluid? The fluid in a hydraulic system is usually highly pressurized, very hot, and toxic. Hydraulic fluid may also be flammable. These properties can lead to injuries or facility damage if a hose bursts loose from a coupling.
What are some safety tips to follow during normal operation of hydraulic equipment? During normal operation of hydraulic equipment always use the machine only as it was intended to be used, follow all safe work practices required by employer, wear appropriate PPE, and during operation pay attention to anything unusual that seems wrong with the machine.
