HVAC systems are used to maintain clean, conditioned air in enclosed spaces. The term "conditioned" refers to the fact that the temperature and humidity of the air are maintained within desired ranges. This module describes the two most common cooling systems as well as heating devices used in HVAC systems.

Temperature control is accomplished by heating and cooling systems. HVAC heating systems can be all air, air water, or steam. HVAC cooling systems can be direct expansion systems or chiller systems. Heat exchanger coils are the primary device used by both heating and cooling systems. Electric coils, gas heaters and infrared heaters can also be used in heating applications. Humidity control can be accomplished using humidifiers or dehumidifiers. HVAC system controls regulate air flows, temperatures, and humidities, and also provide for the safe and efficient operation of the HVAC equipment.
