Key Questions
The following key questions are answered in this module:
What are the roles of emergency responders?
There are four levels of responders: first responder awareness level, first responder operations level, hazmat technician, and hazmat specialist.
What is the difference between a hazmat technician and a specialist?
Hazmat technicians are trained to approach the release point and stop the release. Specialists have knowledge of hazardous substances and assist hazmat technicians with developing a response plan.
What information needs to be included in an emergency response plan?
An emergency response plan needs to include site-specific information for responding to emergencies involving hazardous materials. For example, personnel roles, lines of authority, hazard identification, and emergency response procedures.
What is an Integrated Contingency Plan (ICP)?
Other federal regulations also require emergency response planning. To prevent a duplication of effort in order to satisfy each emergency response plan separately, the National Response Team (NRT) has developed an Integrated Contingency Plan (ICP) guidance document to provide a template for emergency response plans.
What information should be a part of an ICP core plan?
The core plan should include four elements: discovery, initial response, sustained actions, and termination actions.
