Many industrial processes, like kilns and boilers, discharge spent gases to the atmosphere. These gases, called "flue gases," are often treated to remove pollutants in order to meet environmental regulations. Sometimes, enough particulate is recovered that it is worth returning to the process. An electrostatic precipitator, or ESP, is one method for removing particulate matter from flue gas. This module will describe the major components as well as the purpose and operating principles of an electrostatic precipitator.

The following key questions are answered in this module:
What is the purpose of an electrostatic precipitator?Electrostatic precipitators remove particulate matter from industrial flue gas streams prior to those streams being discharged to the atmosphere.
What is the principle behind the operation of an electrostatic precipitator? As flue gas flows through a precipitator, dust particles become ionized in a high-energy electrical field. The charged particles are then collected on an oppositely charged surface.
What is the purpose of rappers in dry electrostatic precipitators? In dry precipitators rappers periodically knock the dust collection surfaces and cause the accumulated particles to fall to the bottom of the precipitator.
What type of electricity is used in electrostatic precipitator?Normal alternating current is boosted to the kilovolt range in a transformer and then rectified and delived to the electrodes of the precipitator as high voltage direct current electricity.
What is the purpose of a distribution screen?A distribution screen at the inlet of a precipitator creates a uniform and evenly distributed flow of gas through the precipitator chambers.
