In a continuous digester, wood chips and liquor are continuously fed to, and withdrawn from, a pressure vessel. Continuous cooking offers some distinct advantages over batch cooking, including reduced space requirements, improved cooking control, and improved energy efficiency. Many variations of continuous digester equipment and process conditions have been used. Some digesters are hydraulically filled, while others utilize a vapor phase. This module covers the basic principles of operation of vapor phase continuous digesters.

The following key questions are answered in this module:
What is a vapor phase digester?A vapor phase digester is a continuous digester which is not completely filled with liquor during operation. A small area near the top of the digester is filled with steam which condenses on the chips and heats them prior to them entering the liquor.
What are some of the goals of the chip feed system on a continuous digester? In the chip feed system, air is driven from the chips and replaced with water, the chips are partially heated, and they are transferred from a low pressure environment to a high pressure environment.
What is one advantage of a vapor phase digester?By heating chips in the vapor portion of the digester, the need for an indirect heating zone circulation heater is eliminated, as well as the scaling problems which are often associated with that heater.
How are process zones established within a continuous digester? The temperature and chemical concentrations of zones within the digester are controlled by the introduction and withdrawal of liquor at different elevations along the digester.
What job is performed by a top separator in a continuous digester? The top separator receives a mix of chips and liquor. The separator moves the chips into the digester and returns the bulk of the liquor for use in the chip transport loop.
