A thought experience popularized by Dr. W. Edwards Deming called the "Nelson Funnel" demonstrates the importance of not making adjustments to an in-control process. In the experiment, a funnel is positioned a few inches above a flat surface. There is a target directly under the funnel. One hundred marbles are dropped through the funnel to try to get as many marbles as possible on or near the target. When a marble is dropped through the funnel and lands on the surface, it will always roll an unknown distance in a random direction.
If we leave the funnel completely still and don't adjust it at all, the resulting marble locations will be pretty widely distributed in a rough circle around the target.
