Components of a BAS include sensors, actuators and hardware modules. Sensors are measuring devices that convert a physical reality into a signal. Actuators are connected to field controllers that modulate valves and dampers. The sensors and actuators are attached to input/output ports on hardware modules that produce electric signals according to the inputs and outputs. The interaction among these devices is orchestrated by the controllers, embedded with control logic that controls the actuators by the feedback from the inputs, or by commands from the system. The components work together in a process called the control loop. The input signal is received by a sensor or a device which is connected to the controller. The controller, which is processed by the logic, controls the response to the output device. This can be a variable frequency device, or another device such as an actuator, controlling a damper, valve, relay, contactor, compressor, blower or pump. Setpoints are used by the controller programming to process inputs and calculate the error between the setpoint to drive an output. Some types of setpoints or critical sensors on a typical air handler, include: outside airflow, discharge air temperature, and duct static pressure. Dead bands allow the equipment to transition between modes while preventing constant cycling between the two modes.
