A building air system provides a controlled environment for personnel working in the building and provides the needed air adjustments. This is done by using exhaust and air makeup to control contaminates and preserve the building structure. This course describes the purpose of building air systems, makeup and exhaust air systems, conditioning methods, and air balance.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • List typical safety hazards and safe work practices associated with building air systems
  • Explain the purpose of an effective building air system
  • Identify the types of equipment used for a makeup air system
  • Explain how an exhaust air system works
  • Describe the methods used for conditioning building air systems
  • Define "air balance" in a building air system

Key Questions

The following key questions are answered in this module:

What is the purpose of a building air system?
A building air system provides a controlled environment for personnel working in the building and provides the needed air adjustments. This is done by using exhaust and air makeup to control contaminants and preserve the building structure.

What is the purpose of a building's air makeup system?
Building makeup air systems are necessary to prevent uncontrolled air infiltration, maintain proper air balance and provide proper air distribution inside a building. Fresh air makeup must be heated in cold climates during the winter months.

What is the purpose of a building's air exhaust system?
Exhaust air systems in industrial buildings remove airborne contaminants, water vapors, heat, and dust generated from the processes. Properly designed exhaust systems are needed in industrial plants to provide comfortable working conditions and protect the building from deterioration and corrosion.

What is air balance?
Air balance is the amount of exhaust air to makeup air.

What is a positive air balance?
When more air is taken in than is taken out.

What is a negative air balance?
When less air is taken in than is taken out.

What is a neutral air balance?
When the amount of air brought in is equal to the amount of air taken out.

Sample Video Transcript

Below is a transcript of the video sample provided for this module:

The type of air conditioning methods and equipment used is determined by the building occupancy. For example, office areas would typically use HVAC equipment with distribution ducting equipped with fans, cooling and heating coils, humidity control equipment, and necessary filters. While in manufacturing areas, supply fans with inlet filters direct air through steam, or glycol heating coils in cold climates. On the wet end of paper machines where exhaust air streams contain large amounts of water and fiber particles, separators may be used to separate water droplets and contaminants from the exhaust air stream before entering the fan. Separators are essential to prevent ice formation on building roofs in cold climates.
